Women's Opportunity Awards

The Women's Opportunity Awards program is Soroptimist International of the Americas major service project. The program aids women who, as primary wage-earners for their families, must enter or return to the work-force. Although not a requirement of the program, many Women's Opportunity Award winners are domestic abuse survivors who use the funds to help rebuild their lives while gaining additional skills, training and education to upgrade their employment status. The program begins on the club level (winners receiving $1,000), with club recipients becoming eligible for the region level awards. Each year, more than $800,000 is disbursed through the program. Violet Richardson Award

The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. The award is named after the president of the first Soroptimist club in 1921, whose motto was, "It's what you do that counter." The program begins on the club level, with both recipients and their volunteer organization receiving an award. Club recipients then become eligible for the region-level awards.
